Description

This one-day IN-PERSON ONLY course on Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma, and the Science of HOPE will be presented by Casey Gwinn, Esq., the lead author of the bestselling, award winning book, “Hope Rising: How the Science of HOPE Can Change Your Life.” He will be joined by Alliance for HOPE International President and CEO, Catherine Johnson.

The course will provide an overview of the impacts of unmitigated trauma and violence in the lives of those experiencing domestic and sexual violence and will provide practical tools for all professionals working with survivors of abuse. Casey and Catherine will present on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and the predictive nature of childhood trauma on adolescent and adult illness, disease, victimization, and perpetration. It will also look at the powerful, transformative impact of increasing hope in the lives of adult and trauma survivors.

Attendees will be introduced to the life changing truth that hope is measurable, cultivatable and predictive of long-term healing and health. Police officers, judges, prosecutors, civil attorneys, advocates, therapists, and medical professionals all feel the impact of secondary or vicarious trauma with similar profound impacts if they don’t address it along the way. Hope mitigates burnout and vicarious trauma.

Casey and Catherine will also talk about the journey to creating a trauma-informed AND hope-centered organization. Alliance for HOPE International was one of the first organizations in the country to move beyond a focus on being trauma-informed to include what it means to be hope-centered. They will also share the lifesaving impacts of the Family Justice Center framework and the transformative work of Camp HOPE America, the first camping and mentoring program in the country focused on children impacted by domestic violence. West Virginia is one of the few states that does not have Family Justice Centers and Camp HOPE America programs, which reduce domestic violence homicides and improve outcomes for adult and child survivors of violence.

Objectives:

1) Increase participants’ understanding of childhood trauma and how it impacts adult behavior addressed in the civil, criminal, and juvenile court setting;

2) Increase participants’ understanding of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study and how to incorporate into your day-to-day work;

3) Increase participants’ understanding of the science of HOPE and how hope can help heal trauma and improve outcomes for survivors of domestic and sexual violence; and

4) Create a dialogue about the journey ahead to improve program impacts and outcomes in West Virginia.
