Top8 - 07/07/25
July 06, 2025 - 10:28 PM
Welcome back to Top8 where the 8's are topped by the 9's*. As I write this, I have successfully eluded CPD for the better part of a week in my effort to "Notta Regatta" – nobody better drop a dime on this bitch. It's too hot. I didn't like the bands. I am morally opposed to the Fourth of July. And I am annoyed with out of towners crowding into my neighborhood. If you had a good time, I am happy for you. I am glad they have this thing for you. It's not for me. This has been another week where there was just too much music for one edition of Top8, which is a good problem to have. Grill up a veggie dog and settle in for the music. Send your favorite toppings to......
KC and the Sunshine Band Headline July 4 at Charleston's Sternwheel Regatta
July 03, 2025 - 11:52 AM
Harry Wayne Casey, or just KC to the rest of the world, said he was looking forward to bringing KC and the Sunshine Band to Charleston for the Sternwheel Regatta. He’s glad to be playing music, still, at the age of 74. “We’re out mostly on the weekends,” he said. “I’m just not ready to retire yet.” And people still come out to hear them. To be sure, KC and the Sunshine Band were a band of a specific time. They were one of the reigning champions of disco in the mid-1970s with hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “Shake Your Booty,” and “That’s the Way (I Like It).” The group registered over a dozen pop......

Nelsonville Music Festival 2025: Lou edition
June 27, 2025 - 08:20 AM
I went to Nelsonville Music Festival, produced by Stuart’s Opera House, the weekend of the ever-coinciding West Virginia Day and Summer Solstice. This year’s events were in memory of the legendary godfather of underground folk, Michael Hurley. 1 Friday, June 20th After putting up a ten person tent for three people, my friends and I ventured into the heat of Mudville. Everywhere there were golf carts driven by young volunteers. “Can you take us to the media tent?” I asked one that looked like surfer Timothée Chalamet. “Sure, but where is that?” Before I could answer he cracked open his road beer. “This was a tip,” he said. There......
Top8 - 06/22/25
June 22, 2025 - 11:37 PM
Welcome back to Top8. It's still Pride and on behalf of The Alphabet, I am declaring you all honorary queers. See me for your free iced coffee (offer only valid in June and if I am feeling like it). Who are your favorite queer artists? Let us know at wtsq.org/contact (Also, I spent too long on the first review so I kinda had to rush through the rest. I'm not sorry.) Andrew Adkins - Be Still I won't pretend to be objective here. If you want objective, go find someone else's music blog. Andrew Adkins is my best friend. I love him and I love these songs. I was present for the creation of at least a little bit of every single one of these songs. I was also present for the slightly......

Top8 - 06/09/25
June 08, 2025 - 10:50 PM
Welcome back to Top8. I want to wish all of our queer friends a very happy Pride. I have been out as at least one letter in LGBTQ for as long as I have been here, and I have always felt loved and seen and welcome at the radio station. I am so proud that, over the years, we have been one of many voices in Charleston that supports the LGBTQ community. Just in case some of the people in the back didn't quite catch it, I'll say it again. WTSQ stands with queer folk here in Charleston and everywhere. And I want to say this part even more clearly – if you're a trans or nonbinary kid, you're seen, you're valid, and you're loved. If you got no one else on your side, you've got me. My......

Charlie West Music Fest Launches Saturday
May 30, 2025 - 09:26 AM
By Bill Lynch At its heart, Saturday’s inaugural Charlie West Music Fest on the University of Charleston’s lawn is a fundraiser. All shows with a ticket price, of course, are, by nature, fundraisers, but this one isn’t to turn a profit. At least, the Charlie West Music Fest isn’t meant to turn a profit for Fund for the Arts, but for the arts groups it supports. Sarah Wright, the arts organization’s executive director said, “Our sole focus is to raise money for our 11 member arts groups, and you know, there are challenges with today’s landscape.” Money is tight for the arts. It’s a little worse now since the federal government......
