Top8 - 08/18/25
August 18, 2025 - 12:52 AM
Welcome back to Top8. Apparently two weeks have passed, but I cannot account for the passage of time. By the time you are reading this, I will already be underway with the fall semester, which longtime readers will know, means that I am near death and about to balance myself on the razor's edge for the next few months. Music is there for me in these times, and I know it is for you in your hard or weird times too. Over the past week, I got to watch the Perseids and celebrate a dear friend's birthday. I also listened to "Masterpiece" by Big Thief at least 60 times while something other than sober. Interesting days. I also caught the Jeff Buckley documentary at the Floralee. It's a flawed......

Listeners can dive into Lou’s New Music Monday playlist, enjoy a Friday morning of on-air fun with Lou and Duncan, and hear Mya’s interview with Sean Richardson on The Morning Mix. DJ Tom Sloan’s Breaking Down the Pressure features guest Mya Ross of Arts Amplified, while the local......

Top8 - 08/04/25
August 04, 2025 - 10:11 PM
Welcome back to Top8. The horrors persist and so do we. This past weekend I was lucky enough to go to The Athens Community Arts and Music Festival with dear friends from the station. I got to see a lot of bands that I have been playing over the last few years on Attention Please, including Pal, Dana, & Gustaf. All of these acts exceeded my expectations – I have been listening to Gustaf for a while, but I was totally unprepared for the madness and brilliance of their live set. Pal was just as weird and fun as I hoped. Dana played the kind of nervous, bouncy/twitchy post-punk that I love. A real standout for me was the band The Laughing Chimes. These are Appalachian kids from......
On The Record: Aug 4th
August 04, 2025 - 03:00 PM
The August 4th, 2025 edition of On The Record spotlights a vibrant mix of music, culture, and community, from live shows with The Wilson Project and the Concert on the River, to the return of the Books and Booze Adult Book Fair and the beloved Multifest diversity festival. Highlights include Emily’s genre-spanning “Top 8” playlist, a memorable BugsWrrrld session with Ligature’s Em, and updates on WTSQ’s new CharlesTunes Podcast Center. Rounding out the issue are features on upcoming guests for The Morning Mix with Mya, a profile of Charleston wellness studio Centered, and a reminder that WTSQ’s diverse, volunteer-powered programming thrives thanks to......

Top8 - 07/21/25
July 21, 2025 - 12:14 AM
Welcome back to Top8. When I wrote that just now, I thought of it like, "well, come back to Top8" like I am pleading with you to come back and give our love just one more chance. In the past week, I have barely left the apartment and every time I did I felt like there was a god and he hated me. This heat is just too much for me. I know I bitch and moan about this a lot, but good lord, I cannot think of anything else. And this will probably be the coolest summer of the rest of my life. If you're one of these lunatics driving around in a truck the size of the trailer I grew up in, I want you to know that I blame you personally for all this. Send your favorite picks for......

Top8 - 07/07/25
July 07, 2025 - 12:28 AM
Welcome back to Top8 where the 8's are topped by the 9's*. As I write this, I have successfully eluded CPD for the better part of a week in my effort to "Notta Regatta" – nobody better drop a dime on this bitch. It's too hot. I didn't like the bands. I am morally opposed to the Fourth of July. And I am annoyed with out of towners crowding into my neighborhood. If you had a good time, I am happy for you. I am glad they have this thing for you. It's not for me. This has been another week where there was just too much music for one edition of Top8, which is a good problem to have. Grill up a veggie dog and settle in for the music. Send your favorite toppings to......
KC and the Sunshine Band Headline July 4 at Charleston's Sternwheel Regatta
July 03, 2025 - 01:52 PM
Harry Wayne Casey, or just KC to the rest of the world, said he was looking forward to bringing KC and the Sunshine Band to Charleston for the Sternwheel Regatta. He’s glad to be playing music, still, at the age of 74. “We’re out mostly on the weekends,” he said. “I’m just not ready to retire yet.” And people still come out to hear them. To be sure, KC and the Sunshine Band were a band of a specific time. They were one of the reigning champions of disco in the mid-1970s with hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “Shake Your Booty,” and “That’s the Way (I Like It).” The group registered over a dozen pop......
