Top8 - 04/15/24
April 14, 2024 - 02:37 PM
Controversal sweetheart Emily Beane back with another Top8. I want to say you couldn't pay me to stop doing this, but actually you probably could. Times are tough. But it would be a lot. Please direct all better offers to wtsq.org/contact I am really excited for the new John Moreland album, and I very pleasantly surprised by the new Andrew Bird single. Lots of great music coming out right now. Aluminum - Behind My Mouth Five seconds into "Behind My Mouth" I was thinking of the Madchester scene. If you're a fan of bands like The Stone Roses, you'll like this track, and this band in general. The underlying "shufflebeat" rhythm works in the same dancy repeating figures......

I want to start this off with a special shout out to all of my trans and nonbinary siblings out there. As I write this on Sunday, March 31st, it's Trans Visibility Day. We are the ones who named ourselves, and we are not going anywhere. You're not alone. Anyway, back again for another Top8. Some weeks it's a challenge to pick only 8 things. This week, I'd have really struggled to find a ninth. Maybe it's the end times. Please send all locust plagues to wtsq.org/contract. Cloud Nothings - I'd Get Along For a brief moment in the 2010s, I had given up on new punk or even punk adjacent music. It wasn't speaking to me anymore. Then I heard Cloud Nothings. This is one of those times when......

Welcome back to Top8. I hope everyone has survived the week off in the new publication schedule. It worked out to be a bit of luck for me, as I have been on vacation over the past week. While I was away, I saw Hurray for the Riff Raff, Lung, and Girl Cologne -- wildly different shows, and all really cool. I am also really excited to get into some new music with you all. Please send all suggestions related to travel or music to wtsq.org/contact. Dave Matthews - Pretty Bird People hate The Dave Matthews Band. I have been personally denigrated by mean-spirited music snobs for the fact that I don’t. That said, it’s hard to be a defender of the band in 2024. Their last really......

You know you're doing a good job at something when your boss tells you to do less of it. So yeah, Top8 is going to every other week starting with this one. Being emotional will get us nowhere. You're just lucky they didn't get ChatGPT to write this. Please send condolences to wtsq.org/contact. The full length Pissed Jeans and Mannequin Pussy albums are out. Also new stuff from local favorite Emmy Deal. One of the beautiful things about music is that, no matter when you check, someone, somewhere has just released an amazing song that will change someone's life. That's why you've got to listen to new music. St. Vincent - Broken Man I have been a fan of Anne Clark's music project......

It's been a whole week. Time is a flat circle and all that. I had this really good vegan chocolate with crushed coffee beans in it. I joined the entire city of Charleston at the Dinosaur Burps show at the Snack Institute the other night. Awesome show at a really cool venue. I don't know what else you want from me. It's really late and I've been busy. I promise to do better next time. Please send your favorite bourbon cocktail recipie to wtsq.org/contact. Velvet - FocusStarting this week off, shockingly, with a shoegaze track. Velvet is squarely in my musical tastes. Noisy shoegaze with a jagged guitar sound. On the band's first album, they offer an admittedly bog......

When they asked me to do this music blog for the station, I asked how long it should be. Chris Long said, "750 words". This week, we're at 1750 including an album review of the new Idles. Stop me before I kill again. Please send thinly veiled threats and outright lies to wtsq.org/contact DIIV - Brown Paper Bag Sometimes you see there's new music from a band you love and there's a moment where you worry — is this the album where they finally fail to deliver? I have never worried about that with DIIV. The band's new album is set to drop 05/24, and, if the new single is any indication, they have not yet jumped the shark. The dreamy, lush waves of the song run parallel to jagged......

Who can believe it's already almost Valentine's day? Always remember, even if no one else loves you, WTSQ does (just don't be weird about it). Our love language is new music, so let's get into this week's selections. Send all valentines to WTSQ.org/contact. Yard Act - We Make Hits First up, new stuff from Yard Act. The Leeds post-punk act feel like genre stalwarts at this point, but the new album, Where's My Utopia is only their second. Look for that on March 1st. In the meantime, the band has released four excellent singles, including We Make Hits which we are reviewing today. The song about being a band is a pretty well worn trope at this point. It's always struck me as a little odd......

Welcome to Top8 for the week of 02/04/2024. Very excited for new music this week from Stephanie Lambring. Andrew and I brought you this on The Crows Nest this week. We've both been huge fans of her's for a while now. New stuff from Gossip was also a surprise as I didn't realize they were still kicking around. Also, glad to bring a new track from a West Virginia artist. Please send your gushing praise to WTSQ.org/contact. Fat White Family - Bullet of Dignity First up, the return of Fat White Family. The London band is certainly well established in the scene. To me though, they have always seemed like a strange presence lurking around the periphery of the post-punk revival. This is......

January 28, 2024 - 11:26 PM
It seems like this week's Top8 is mostly revivals of this or that genre. This really didn't occur to me until I had finished writing it. If you're not completely satisfied, I will give you double your click back. That's the WTSQ guarantee. Please direct all abuse to https://wtsq.org/contact. Sarah Shook & The Disarmers - RevelationsSarah Shook and the Disarmers is a band fronted by River Shook. For those who may have missed it, Shook came out as nonbinary and changed their personal name a couple years ago. The band is carrying on under their old name. While Shook may have changed some of their presentation, the band is as solid as ever. Revelations is the second single from the......
